Description or Artist's Statement
Political cartoons often bear witness to and push up against power structures in a society, creating space for social commentary through satire, humor, and wit. Illustrators are often among the first artistic responders to events and issues in society. Their broad circulation, often through periodicals, provides them with a wide audience and often a vigorous response. Finding their roots in satirical art of 16th-century artists such as Pieter Bruegel the Elder, political cartoons, and criticism of power, have been a mainstay of artistic practice for centuries.
