2017-2018: Scott County, Iowa Health Department
In second year of the partnership with SWLI, the Scott County Health Department is continuing its emphasis on lead poisoning in the county a top priority, and has partnered with SWLI with these three goals in mind:
1. Identify with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) the areas of highest risk in the county
2. Explore the possibility of public and/or private coalitions for collaboration on the issue
3. Research alternative methods of funding for the implementation of a new approach to remediation
Students are performing GIS analysis to pinpoint the high-risk areas, conducting case studies on other communities to identify their approaches to the problem, formulating up-to-date fact sheets on lead, acting as investigative journalists, researching funding methods (including tax incentives), and producing professional-grade risk maps. All final reports will be submitted to the Scott County Health Department upon their completion and published in Augustana Digital Commons.
